According to recent census data, minority Americans will become the majority population by 2050. The rapidly growing increase of racial and ethnic groups across the country has left very few areas untouched by diversity. What are the implications for how we approach our work if we are to be inclusive, empathetic, respectful and responsive? At the heart of cultural competence is cultural humility. Cultural humility encourages us to be willing to be a learner, acknowledge that learning about others is a lifelong endeavor, understand cultural differences, and recognize our own biases.

Participants in this training will gain an understanding of how cultural competence, cultural humility and implicit bias intersect and the importance of allowing clients to articulate their own experiences while the practitioner becomes the learner. Through group discussions and small group activities, participants will learn a set of skills to approach any individual from any culture at any time with humility while reducing implicit bias, ultimately cultivating connections which strengthen client-practitioner relationships and produce quality client outcomes.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define race, ethnicity, diversity, equity and inclusion
  2. Understand the intersection between cultural competence, cultural humility, and implicit bias in human services
  3. Recognize one’s own biases and how they may unconsciously influence interactions with clients from different backgrounds
  4. Become familiar with the 5 R’s of cultural humility which aim to reduce implicit bias
  5. Explore key strategies for cultivating compassionate connections as a tool to strengthening client outcomes
