Over the years, trauma and the effects of trauma have been heavily researched in the mental health field. Furthermore, mental health symptoms as a result of trauma are present in many communities and often go unresolved or undiagnosed. Trauma screening tools such as ACEs (Adverse Childhood Experiences) have helped pave the way to defining trauma. Not only have these tools helped with defining trauma, but these tools have also helped with highlighting areas of concern and exploration when working with clients who may display certain behaviors because of trauma. The recent emergence of culturally competent and diverse care shows there is more to be done to ensure trauma tools and professionals working with individuals of color are fully equipped to understand how the correlation of trauma and race exists. Once this correlation is better understood, enhanced treatment of trauma in communities of color can emerge.
Trauma in the Black Community: Healing Within is a trauma informed training merging traditional fundamentals of trauma understanding with cultural competency and understanding of working with black communities.
